What Is Urinary Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer develops in the tissues of the bladder, which is the organ that stores pee in the body. According to the National Institutes of Health, the illness affects around 45,000 men and 17,000 women each year. Bladder cancer is of three types, including:

Transitional cell carcinoma: It starts in the bladder’s inner layer’s transitional cells. When the tissue is stretched, transitional cells shift form without getting harmed.

Squamous cell carcinoma: Rare cancer that begins when thin, flat squamous cells form in the bladder after long-term infection or irritation.

Adenocarcinoma: Also rare, this type of bladder cancer develops in the bladder when glandular cells grow as a result of chronic bladder irritation and inflammation.

Symptoms Of Bladder Cancer

Fatigue, weight loss, and bone soreness are some of the symptoms that might suggest bladder cancer, and they can signify a more advanced illness. Pay special attention to the following signs and symptoms.

  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent or urgent urination
  • Painful urination
  • Discomfort in the abdomen
  • Inconsistent urination
  • Pain in the lower back

Risk Factors Of Bladder Cancer

The following factors can increase the risk of bladder cancer:

Smoking

By allowing hazardous chemicals to collect in the urine, smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes may raise the risk of bladder cancer. The dangerous substances in cigarettes can destroy the lining of your bladder, raising your cancer risk.

Increasing age

As you become older, your chances of developing bladder cancer rise. Though bladder cancer can strike anybody at any age, the majority of those diagnosed are over the age of 55.

Eating a high-fat diet

A study published in the journal Investigative and Clinical Urology found that eating a diet rich in unhealthy fats can increase the risk of bladder cancer.

Being male

Studies have shown that males are more likely to develop this type of cancer as compared to women.

Family history

Although bladder cancer seldom runs in families, if one of your blood relatives — a parent, sibling, or child — has had the disease, you may be at an elevated risk of developing it.

Low fluid consumption

Fluid consumption is crucial for digestion, absorption, transportation, and metabolism. Toxins and waste materials in the body are also eliminated by the use of water. Studies have shown that a lack of fluid in the system can up the risk of bladder cancer.

Chronic bladder infections

Chronic or recurrent urinary infections or inflammation (cystitis), such as those caused by the use of a urinary catheter for an extended period, may raise the risk of squamous cell bladder cancer.

Exposure to cancer-causing chemicals

The kidneys are responsible for filtering toxic substances from the circulation and transporting them to the bladder. As a result, it’s possible that being exposed to certain chemicals raises the chance of bladder cancer.

How to Prevent The Disease?

While no one can predict whether you will get cancer or not, it is always best to make certain changes in your life to prevent the disease.

  • Avoid smoking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid exposure to carcinogenic chemicals
  • Secondhand smoke should also be avoided
  • Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables
